When in Canada 101

About Me
To all international students in Canada out there!!! (trying to shout out as loud as I can)

Yup I'm calling you guys! Why? Because I want to give you all a big hug for making it so far. Studying abroad is not easy. But is it worthwhile? Totally! I have had a lot of fun in this beautiful country, made friends from different continents, and have had lots of new experiences.

So, who am I? Hmm, that’s a good question. My friends usually describe me as an energetic, adaptive, and determined person. Throughout my 26-years of life, I constantly want to jump into a new environment like a small fish wanting to discover the ocean.

“I always did something I was a little not ready to do. I think that's how you grow.” Marissa Mayer
This is my favorite quote and I believe that all of my important decisions in life so far have been based on it.
As an international student, I understand how difficult it is to study and work in a new country. Before coming to Canada, I worked in Malaysia for one year as a Campaign Specialist, and that experience was good preparation for me to study here. But still, I have to admit, it’s hard to study abroad when you don’t know anyone in the location you choose. I have gone through many ups and downs, but overall, I think I have done well so far (yay).

During my life in Canada (1 year, 6 months, and still counting!), I finished the Marketing Management course at Humber College while making the Dean’s Honour List in all terms, working a part-time job at Cineplex, and completing an internship for my work placement. Right now, I’m in the process of completing my second program, which is Content Strategy at the same college, and I got on the Dean’s Honour list the last term.

I believe that through the experiences and knowledge I have gained so far, I could help others to deal with their challenges. I have seen some people struggling with culture shock, making friends, finding a part-time job, doing paperwork… the list goes on and on.

That’s why I decided to write about dealing with these challenges in When in Canada 101 – a guideline for international students living in Canada. On my website, international students can find information about everything, from “big” things such as where to find a place to rent, how to extend your study permit, to little, cute things, such as which Vietnamese restaurants are good in Toronto, where can I buy bubble tea, etc.

Oh…and the most important thing: this website is not just about me. Don’t hesitate to connect with me, ask questions, and even more so, share your stories—I would like to hear them all, and I’m sure many others would benefit from them as well! My goal is to build this website as a fun and safe place for all international students to learn and help each other. So, don’t hesitate to reach out, and I thank you for spending your time to read my bio until the end. I wish that you will have a great journey in Canada!
